On Design
We believe good design does not shout. It presents itself quietly and lets time do the explaining. A piece should look better at five years than it did at five minutes.
On Craft
There is no shortcut in the work we respect. Material, construction, and finishing are not production steps — they are the design itself. We take time because the result demands it.
On the Wearer
We design for people who move with ease between cultures and contexts — who carry a clear sense of themselves, and seek objects that reflect that clarity. We are not for everyone, and we mean that as a compliment.
On Africa
Lagos is not a point of origin we footnote — it is the reason we see form differently. Our roots inform our lines. Our heritage is not decoration; it is structure.

Every Shem Duma object begins in the hand. Materials are selected by touch as much as sight — the way leather gives slightly underfoot, the tension in a hand-stitched seam, the weight of a sole that grounds you without excess.
Our production is intentionally limited. This is not scarcity for its own sake. It is the natural result of refusing to accelerate what should take time. Our collaborators are craftspeople who still make things slowly, and we consider that a form of luxury.
Stewardship
We think of stewardship as the third dimension of design — after form and function. An object that cannot be repaired, refreshed, or passed on is not a luxury: it is disposable with a high price tag.
Shem Duma pieces are built to be worn for years and then handed forward. We offer care guidance with every purchase, and we are developing a refresh programme for pieces that need attention. We believe in the long view — and we make accordingly.
